Laws banning discrimination based on sexual orientation (8 states) Wisconsin(1982); Massachusetts(1982); Connecticut(1991); Vermont(1992); New Hampshire(1997); Nevada(1999); Maryland(2001); New York(2002)  1: The law passed the Iowa legislature on April 25, 2007 and is expected to be signed by the governor. The law will take effect on July 1, 2007.
2: The law passed the Oregon legislature on April 19, 2007 and is expected to be signed by the governor. The law will take effect on January 1,2008.
3: California, DC, New Jersey and Rhode Island first passed sexual orientation non-discrimination laws, then latter passed gender identity/expression laws.
4: In 1991, Hawaii enacted a law prohibiting sexual orientation discrimination and gender identity/expression discrimination in employment. In 2005, it enacted a law prohibiting sexual orientation and gender identity/expression discrimination in housing. In 2006, public accommodations protections were added for sexual orientation and gender identity/expression.
Note: In addition to these 19 state laws, about 100 municipalities in the 31 states without non-discrimination laws have local non-discrimination laws.
In 2007 Many states throughout the country are adding their name to the list of states with a non-discrimination act to protect the LGBT community as a whole by adding sexual orientation to their current laws; Below is a map that show the states supporting non-discrimination.
